Congratulations to Amanda - new Junior Stylist at Hairroin Salon!!
Amanda has just recently been promoted from Assistant to Junior Stylist, let's get to know her a little better...
H: When did you first know you wanted to work with hair?
A: I knew I wanted to work with hair after I had an office job doing home equity loans when I was 20 years old. I realized after being trapped in a cubicle that I needed a creative outlet where I get to talk to people as well. Doing hair was the obvious choice, so I went straight to beauty school and now here I am!
H: How did you get started?
A: I couldn't figure out where exactly I wanted to live and start my career at first. I spent two and a half years in a training program in San Francisco and then decided I needed more sunshine and I wanted to pursue editorial styling in addition to working in the salon. I found Hairroin Salon and fell in love with the people and the style.
H: Who has been your mentor? and What was their greatest piece of advice?
A: I was very fortunate to start out at a salon where I looked up to every stylist and their work inspired me in different ways. I got to assist Amita Moticka, director of Di Pietro Todd Academy and owner of their Mill Valley location. She taught me about the finesse of blowdrying and styling, as well as precision cutting.
After moving to LA, Sarah Merrie became a great mentor to me. She calls herself a hair nerd, I think she is more of a scientist. She knows everything about everything about color. Her greatest advice was that perfect practice makes perfect!
H: What's your specialty?
A: Cute, short haircuts.
H: What accomplishment are you most proud of?
A: Giving back to the community is important to me. I heard of a charity through Janine, called Choose When to Lose. It's an organization that arranges haircuts for children and teens who are losing their hair from chemotherapy or other treatments. I volunteer with them and was picked for Chosen Heart of the Month.
H: Where do you hope to take this career in 5 years from now?
A: In five years from now I would like to have a steady balance of being busy in the salon and doing magazine shoots consistently as well as going on tour with a band and seeing the world while doing what I love!

Hairroin's Prescription for Baldness
The best way to maintain the bald look and to go about loosing hair is to own it and embrace your baldness.
There are several types of hair loss, One of them being a receding hair line, another one being the thinning of the crown due to having fine hair and or genetics, and others falling in the category of alopecia and so on.
There are several methods that you can go about to try and prevent your hair loss or alter it to make your hair seem more full for example hair products, styling techniques, pills, comb-overs, toupees and even surgery such as hair implants, but nothing is sexier then a confident man who "owns" what cards they have been dealt with and accepting it.
In this situation it is best to have a super short hair style such as a buzzed cut or a shaved head and maintain the upkeep which is easy to do. In fact, shaving your head and having a short buzzed cut will make you look younger and gives you an edgy credibility since it is hip and socially acceptable now.
A buzzed or shaved head can also make you appear sharp which can also give you a professional image. Having short hair or no hair at all is easy to maintain and there are products available for you. Moisturizing products would be perfect with an SPF of at least 15 to avoid sunburn during summer, along with a smooth clean look. Go with it.

Breaking Bald - Breaking Bad Hairroin Style
Breaking Bad is one of the best shows on the silver screen in the past 20 years - there's no denying that. However, as hair experts - we were all thoroughly bored by the cast's choices of hairstyle.
Is it part of a social commentary on how the most normal, boring, well-to-do, all-American family can be driven into the seedy underworld of methamphetamine production and distribution by the increasingly absurd cost of healthcare?
That's one interpretation, but we've chosen to give the cast a makeover anyway!
It's just as bizarre as the show's newly leaked alternate ending.(Watch it here - SPOILER WARNING!!!)

Color Conditioners - Keeping Your Color(s)
Color depositing conditioners are a great way to maintain that "just left the salon" vibrant color. They work just like your regular conditioner, but have added color or pigment into the mixture to keep hair color fresh.
They are extremely easy to use, simply apply to towel dried hair after shampooing and let set for a few minutes. Then rinse. That's all there is to it. It works almost like an at home color gloss but without the chemicals. Use as often as needed or when color begins to look dull.
Hairroin offers an array of colors from cool reds, coppers, chocolatey browns, and even silver for those rocking a platinum look. Consult with a stylist to determine the right shade for you.

Growing out a Pixie!
-Zachary Kilian
The grow out process can be uncomfortable. And while you will need a lot of patience to power through it , you can take a few steps to help you along the way. You should schedule a cut at the beginning of your grow out to tighten up the back and debulk the sides, helping you avoid the bubblehead look as it grows. After initial cut, you should pop in regularly for neck trims, this will keep you from getting a mullet look and help maintain a more flattering shape. Also get creative with styling. Add a bit of texture or wave to change it up. Throw on a head band or strategically placed bobby pins to create a more dramatic look. Just remember to have fun with it and keep in keep in mind that your hair is constantly growing.
After being inspired by the likes of Michelle Williams, Halle Berry, and Anne Hathaway. There's been a surge of daring young girls requesting dramatic short dos. Many go on to maintain the look for awhile, but for most they seem to hit a short hair wall and make the decision to grow it out.

Bobs are Back and Hotter than Ever!
By Zachary Killion
The look can be customized for anyone desiring a change. A fringe or soft layerying may be used to create a more flattering silhouette for your face shape. Consult with your stylist to determine the best look for you.
Also keep in mind, there's more than one way to style your new cut. While a smooth sleek finish really accentuates the shape of the bob, don't be afraid to add a little texture. Throwing in a soft wave or curl easily transforms the look from sleek and sexy to fun and flirty. Or comb and smooth those waves out for an elegant retro vibe.
Do keep in mind that it is a commitment, and you should be prepared for the new look. Maybe even go as far as taking a trip to a wig store to actually try on a style similar to what you want. There's also an array of computer apps that allow you to upload your own photo and effortlessly try on different styles to help determine if the look suits you. The more you know the less likely you are to suffer from a bout of cutters remorse.
Check out more on Bobs in this article Zachary was a part of: http://magazine.foxnews.com/style-beauty/welcome-back-bob-haircut-fall!

Keeping Your Color
Dye jobs can look AMAZING as soon as you step out of the chair, but without proper care, fading can happen quicker than you'd expect. Here are some salon secrets to keeping your color as long as possible!
The first most important is having a good color safe shampoo or a shampoo made specifically for color treated hair. At Hairroin we carry a bunch of different products that help prevent your color from fading.
For example we have Orbie for beautiful color shampoo and conditioner or the Davines NouNou for color treated hair. But if your color tends to fade faster then normal we even have special shampoos with a slight tint of color to refresh your color every time you wash.
Davines has a line of tinted shampoos and conditioner in three shades - one for red, brunette and a violet to keep your blonde as bright as possible. Also, we have a new line of conditioners called Fabuloso with shades to satisfy just about every color client.
Besides using good products to keep your color fresh another good tip is to try not to wash your hair as often - when you do, make sure to use cooler water. The cold water closes your hair's cuticle making it harder for the color to escape.

Hairstyles and the Shape of Your Face: Diamond
When searching for the perfect new hair style to look and feel great in, your face shape is one of the most important things to consider. Choosing your new look or deciding whether or not your current style is right for you really depends on how it fits your face. Does your potential or current hair style work well with your face shape?
You may already know that it works or doesn't when the good people in your life tell you so! Most of the time, even when we get rave reviews about our hair, we still are never really quite sure...that's when science comes in!
...Well, a decent tape measure and a pencil and paper anyway!
There are 6 common face shapes with which most people walk upon this wonderful planet of ours: Oval, Round, Heart, Square, Pear/Triangle, and Diamond!
Below, I will share with you how to measure to find out what face shape you have, and once a week I will also give insight on what kind of styles suit each shape, as well as pictures of celebrity examples.
MEASURING YOUR FACE:(you need a tape measure, pen/pencil and paper)
1. Measure your face from across the top of one cheekbone (the widest points), across your nose
and to the other, and write your measurement down.
2. Measure from the widest point of your jawline over to the other and write down the measurement.
3. Measure across your forehead at the widest points and write the measurement down.
4. Measure from the middle of your hairline to your chin and write that down too.

Diamond
Your face is the widest at the cheekbones with the forehead and chin being narrower but about the same size as each other.
Ideally, you would want to add fullness or texture at the forehead and jawline, and to avoid fullness only at the cheekbone area.
Short styles can work well on this face, but they should be shorter than ear-length and should include some sort of bangs.
Center parts also tend to create an unbalanced look on this face. Along with short styles, chin-length and shoulder-length styles are also great choices. Blunt cuts, and straight bangs highlight this face's beautiful cheekbones, as do side parts. Even tucking hair behind the ears looks great!

HOMBRÉ
The Perils of At-Home
Ombré Kits
by Heather Rae Cheszek, Senior Stylist at Hairroin
Caution! Don’t let “Do it yourself”, “Natural looking, easy to
apply”, and “Achieve subtle dip-dyed effects at home” convince you to go balls
to the wall with your next hair color goal. Leave the DIY project enthusiasm to
chevron painting your bedroom or dip-dying fabrics in a bucket. This is your
hair we’re talking about! Your beautiful, self-identifiable hair! Let’s not muck it up experimenting with
pre-packaged dye kits.
I’ve been a professionally licensed stylist for over 10 years. At
first I thought ombré hair color was just going to last a season or two, but
almost 4 years later the trend is still going strong. As stylists, we create
melted blends of shades effortlessly and have the experience and the wizardry
of using a multitude of professional quality (and customizable) hair color
products. The main reason you should NOT attempt to use an “easy” at-home Ombré
kit is because eight times out of ten, it’s the reason clients come to us for
color correction these days.
I’ve heard clients in our salon talk about the perks of saving
money, or the time saved not having to come to the shop by using the at-home
kits but then they turn up in our chairs exhaustively apologizing for the
“whoopsie” they’ve done to themselves. We’ve seen it all at Hairroin when it
comes to ombré; ranging from a harsh line with zero blending all the way to a
complete frizz ball of over-processed hair.
There are so many benefits to having your colorist ombré your
hair at the salon. First, s/he has a perfect 360º view of your head which
guarantees even application and tones. Second, your colorist can customize any
shade or shades to make it a perfect fit for your ombré. At Hairroin, we have
an ENTIRE wall of color with endless combinations. Third, we do these ALL THE
TIME and we’re REALLY good at it. As your colorists we can ensure that the
ombré blends seamlessly and is even all the way around the head. Finally, your
colorist always has your back on the condition and health of your hair.
So, before you go running out to the store with the desire to
save a lil money and buy an at-home ombré kit, please look at yourself in the
mirror and tell yourself you deserve the best, and the best can be found behind
a chair at Hairroin.

Hairstyles and the Shape of Your Face: Pear/Triangle

Pear/Triangle: Your face is most narrow at the forehead and wider at the jawline.
This shape is best with short hairstyles that have volume at the top, crown, and/or temple areas.
Curl and wave works well here. Avoid chin-length styles, particularly if the hair is straight.
For longer styles, use short to medium layers to keep some volume up top that tapers toward the bottom. Also with longer lengths, the jaw will be best balanced with waves or curled-in layers rather than layers that flip outward.

Fine Hair, Finer Styles.
Not every style works best on every type of hair - so we're here to help you pick what style works best with YOUR type of hair. If your hair is fine, these are the perfect styles for you:
- one length with blunt ends to create the illusion of thick hair.
- mid length with textured layers to create body and fullness at crown.
- sleek, one length bob for style and structure
- updos using twist and knots. (braids in fine hair will condense the hair)
- and if all else fails "if you cant grow it, sew it! "

SQUARE:
Your face is about as wide as it is long, and the jawline is sharper than what would be on a round face. Stay away from blunt bangs, center parts, and blunt, jaw-length bobs. Try side-swept bangs, curl or waviness, and layers to bring softness to the angles of this face. Also, part your hair on the side, and if you pull your hair back, leave some wispy pieces hanging around your face. Short to medium length hairstyles suits the square face shape, because of the strong jaw.

Your face is narrow at the jawline, then gets wider at the cheekbones, and the forehead is wider than both. You may want to avoid blunt-cut, straight bangs, as they will make the face appear shorter and the forehead wider. Slick-backed styles will have the same effect.
Chin-length and jaw-length cuts look great. Texture such as curl, wave and long layers also accentuate its features. Try side-swept bangs, side parts, and wispy layers to create balance.

Your face is as wide as it is long give or take a small amount.
When working with a round face shape, you may want to avoid any hairstyle that's ear-length. (This length gives a wider appearance.)
Also, avoid blunt-cut straight bangs and styles that add volume or curl to the sides without any up on top.
The most balanced and flattering styles on a round face are those that add fullness at the crown or top of the head, as well as longer styles with little width. Wispy bangs or side-swept bangs are best, and very short styles can work as well. (Just not blunt ear-length.)

Below, I will share with you how to measure to find out what face shape you have, and once a week I will also give insight on what kind of styles suit each shape, as well as pictures of celebrity examples.MEASURING YOUR FACE:
(you need a tape measure, pen/pencil and paper)1. Measure your face from across the top of one cheekbone (the widest points), across your nose and to the other, and write your measurement down.2. Measure from the widest point of your jawline over to the other and write down the measurement.3. Measure across your forehead at the widest points and write the measurement down.4. Measure from the middle of your hairline to your chin and write that down too.
OVAL:
The length of the face is equal to 11/2 times the width.
Oval is considered the best shape to have because it is the shape that fits with most any hairstyle.
