Matt gets his fix!

Blog written by Matt (Friend of Hairroin Salon)

I'm a man. There is no doubt about it. I ride a motorcycle, have a moustache, like to drink beers, bbq, surf, skate, love the outdoors, don't like to ask for directions, and wear whatever pair of jeans on the floor that has my belt and wallet in it (sometimes those are the same jeans for a week or more at a time). No matter how "manly" you are, if you still head down to your Dad's local barber shop (5 cent gum included) to get your military fade on with a touch of butch wax then you are not just a man, but a very out of touch man. As a man I am very particular about a few things: my cologne, deodorant, jeans, shoes, my hair and the products that I use. I have very straight and thin hair. I have tried about twenty different products over the last ten years or so and never had much luck. Due to the texture of my cut and my hair type, my stylist (Janine Jarman) suggested that I use Davines No.4 Glossy Modeling Putty for my hair. I have been using this putty for about a year and have never been happier. It is very lightweight and extremely moldable while still holding well and a light fresh scent. Next time you go see your hair stylist, inquire about what products that work with your hair type and personal preference.

Hey everyone, right now I am loving the Renee Furterer Volumizing Mousse. It leaves the hair feeling soft, looking shiny, with natural looking volume. The mousse also keeps the hair moisturized and is easily removed with brushing, leaving no residue.

Feeling Great! (feeling gooood)

Blog written by Doug (Junior stylist at Hairroin Salon)

Alright, anybody that ever comes in to our humble little abode will get a shampoo from time to time. When I'm shampooing I often hear the words:"oh, that feels so good. I need to do this more often."
My reply is usually(and I feel that this is true) a comment on how we are so busy that it's hard to find the time to go and get a full massage and relax, and that the shampoos here should be a reminder that we need to "take" that time to relax, not wait until you "find" the time, cause it usually never happens... (and now our shameless Salon plug..):

Just last week we had our scalp treatment training from Rene Ferterer.
It involved using a certain treatment called Complex 5 which deep cleanses your scalp and activates your circulation. It contains essential oils of Lavendar and Orange and provides your hair and scalp with strength and toning. This treatment is a once a week treatment and is attributed to healthy new hair growth. And for most who have thinning or lost hair, Re-Growth as well. This is done as a three months on, three months off treatment.
But most of all you get a great "stimulating yet relaxing" scalp and shoulder massage topped off with a nice slow shampoo and condition, something almost everybody needs.
The treatments are very inexpensive, especially considering the "multiple" benefits. They also won't take up your
whole afternoon, morning or evening.

As always, I encourage everybody to take care of themselves(especially you too busy to stop but not-by-choice- workaholics)
Most of all I challenge you to make/TAKE an appointment with your stylist for this great benefit that we can provide for you. You will be thanking youself once we have our hands on your shoulders:)

Residual Energies Art Show at Hairroin Salon

Blog written by Patrick (Senior Stylist at Hairroin Salon)

On Saturday, February 21, Hairroin Salon hosted the Residual Energies Art Show featuring the works of Kyle Ng and Ryan de la Hoz. The show featured an eclectic mix of photography, collage and diorama. The touchstone of the show was an installation piece by Kyle Ng that features a taxidermy fox under attack by squirrels being carried away by balloons attached to their tales. In true LA style, the crowd formed late but the provocative art fueled discussion that was only paused by the performance of White Cloud.

White Cloud opened their set about 11 and played for half an hour. The San Fran based indy rock jazz sound held the revelers rapt as they rotated positions on the stage. The attendees rocked the gamut fashion and many succeeded. Keep your eyes out for the next art show. It's always a good time and you may discover a new artist deserving your patronage.

she's crafty...

Blog written by Robyn (Senior Stlyist at Hairroin Salon)

Today I walked across the street to Space15Twenty during a break to check out what was new and exciting at Urban Outfitters. After I walked around in circles for fifteen minutes, touching every pretty blouse and handling every pair of shoes I could, I finally made my decision. The Big-Ass Book of Crafts by Mark Montano. What a wonderful idea. Three hundred sixty-three pages of easy, cheap and quick crafts. I decided to put one of these to the test to see just how bad-ass this big-ass book really was. I opened my book to page 9, Silhouettes. Beatrice and I then took profile pictures of each other with mini top hats(found at Hairroin Salon) on our heads with our salon camera, downloaded and printed them. We then cut ourselves out, spray painted them black and, voila!, we had our very own silhouettes. What used to take hours to accomplish only took up a quick lunch break. Our craft was such a hit that all our stylists decided to make one of their own and hang them all up at the salon. Way to go team! Turns out my purchase was money well spent!

5 reasons to ALWAYS have a hair DO:

blog written by Marc (Junior stylist at Hairroin Salon) and Monique (Senior stylist at Hairroin Salon)

Five Reasons Why we should always do our hair!

5. It makes you feel amazing no matter how horrid your outfit is!

4. People treat you differently! Trust me, when Monique and myself have our hoodies and beanies on here in Downtown L.A. people want to give us spare change.

3. With a Foxy Blowout, it'll hide and distract people from that embarrassing blemish.

2. You don't want anyone mistaking you for your pet pooch.

and the most crude thing to happen is...

1. You can always run into an ex boyfriend or girlfriend, and to make sure you look great,
have your Haute Hollywood Locks on!

What inspires you?

blog written by Doug (junior stylist at Hairroin Salon)

I am amazed as to where one can find inspiration when they take a moment to look at the details that life in this world unfurls for us.
At times I get so busy and focused on my daily projects, chores and tasks that I forget to look outside of my "work" and life seems dull or even suffocating. By the time I finally realize my predicament I am burnt out and need a recharge of sorts to change direction and get things going again.
This is where inspiration comes in:)
Inspiration can lead us to many things and help us accomplish what we need to achieve. Sometimes it comes seemingly out of nowhere, other times we actively seek it to help us along. For me on this evening while driving home from Vegas, it's the night sky and great music that caught me by surprise. This is what I needed to unwind and to get back to "myself" and feeling grounded again.
Inspiration comes in many forms, be it music, nature, symbols of freedom, other people, movies, etc. It can lead to change whether it be politics or a new haircut or colour, but it doesn't have to lead to change, as is the case for me tonight. I know that life is full of things so cool, beautiful and wicked (in a good sense), the thing is, we must look.

Did you know that the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) is the 2nd most googled word in America? That's more searched than Obama!
...Some of the Divas come in to Hairroin Salon!

I styled hair for some of the loveley WWE divas, the women of World Wrestling for this month's issue of Flex magazine. There is a 7 page spread of photos, here are some of the photos of Candice, Layla, and Beth.

HOT - WWE Divas 6

HOT - WWE Divas 8HOT - WWE Divas 7

HOT - WWE Divas 2
HOT - WWE Divas 3

The shoot was fun, we finished off the day by wetting down everyone's hair for that sweaty/sexy look which was nice because it was actually pretty hot in the boxing gym we shot at!

inspiration found.

blog written by Simon (senior stylist at Hairroin Salon)

I get a lot of inspiration from just walking down the street.
I'm not talking about the countless perfect highlights and precision long layers you so frequently see, but the "do it yourself" cuts and styles you see walking so nonchalantly by. Someone who maybe came home after a few too many glasses of wine and looked into the mirror, got a great idea, and grabbed the nearest cuticle scissors or kitchen shears and threw caution into the wind. Or the kid who has a friend that has aspirations of becoming a world class stylist and is plopped down in front of a mirror by the friend who has clippers in one hand and a comb in the other.
Not that these are ways to have a great haircut. Quite the contrary. But it seems that in the absence of structure, an eye for balance, or a knowledge of the basics of hair cutting/coloring/styling, all rules are broken, and pleasant accidents are reached.
Seeing risks taken that I would not normally take because, who wants to pay to have an experiment done on their head, is extremely inspiring and sometimes just what one needs to leave the very comfortable world of one length cuts and perfect square layers.
Keeping your eye open to the "bad", often allows you to see the truly "good"...

MUSTACHE MADNESS!!!

Blog written by Sarah (Master stylist at Hairroin Salon)

I’m sure this will come as no surprise to you (unless you have been living under rocks) but the Mustache has made a HUGE comeback. This trend in male grooming has surpassed fad status and become an outright movement! I have heard rumors of entire months devoted to growing facial hair (Mustache May, and MOvember), bros making bets on whose will get the longest. I’ve recently seen Mustache glossaries, giving names like “chevron”, “magnum PI”, and “chaplin” to certain facial hair shapes. It has gotten out of control and we LOVE it!

We have been seeing mustaches absolutely everywhere!

It is truly never ending! Even a few of our own Hairroin Team Members have been swept up in the mustache mania..

et tu J9?

It looks like the mustache is here to stay, at least for a while. We couldn’t be happier. I will leave you with a word of advice for the gentlemen: KEEP IT GROOMED PLEASE, and for the ladies… enjoy the ride ;)

Stickam+ Stevie Ryan+ a Pussycat Doll=Hairroin Salon?

blog written by Beatrice (Senior stylist at Hairroin Salon)

Yesterday Stevie Ryan came in to Hairroin Salon to get her color done with masterstylist Sarah Merrie. She brought her laptop computer as usual and broadcast a live stickam show. For those of you who don't know stickam is like the myspace of video chatting. She talked to her internet fans all over the world. Dalina and I both sat and answered hair questions and talked to her online friends in our down time between clients (Tuesdays are a bit calmer than the later in the week days) Even Robin Antin, the creator of the Pussycat Dolls went on camera to talk about The Pussycat Dolls' tour with Britney Spears. Of course only at Hairroin Salon would you have such an ecclectic mix of people on camera!
Hairroin Salon is actually thinking about broadcasting our champagne Friday nights on stickam. We would do a live how every Friday night from 7:00pm-11:00pm that way everyone can watch what we are up to! sound like a good idea?

LAYN goal boards.

Blog written by Janine Jarman (owner of Hairroin Salon)

Sunday feb 8th. We invited the. Layn kids ( los angeles youth network) in to particapate in goal boards! About 20 somethin' kids. Showed up around 5 we had pizzas and sodas.

So we do goal boards with the salon staff at the begining of each year,
And this is the 2nd year we have done this with layn (Los Angeles Youth Network)

My mentor, Donna started doing goal boards with me about 7 years. Ago . They pretty much map out my path and are all leading up to todays goals.

1. A goal is. A dream with a deadline
2. Stick to 3 goals
3. Put #s and dates to them ! Get spacific!
4. Hang it. Up where u see it every day

We cut and paste from magazines, glueing visual references to construction paper.

And then everyone gets up and. Shares there goals, so we can help hold oneanother accountable throughout the year to better achieve there goals.
It. Was. A great sucess! Everyone participated and great goals were set!
